Kenya has pledged to send 600 more police officers to Haiti in the coming weeks to help fight gangs controlling much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and nearby areas. This would bring the Kenyan contingent, deployed incrementally since June to help the Caribbean nation’s beleaguered police force, up to 1,000.

The trip by President William Ruto of Kenya came against a bleak backdrop in Haiti, where gangs operate with impunity and the Kenyan peacekeepers remain largely out of sight.

Kenyan President William Ruto arrived in Haiti on Saturday as the United Nations grapples with how to best support a peacekeeping mission of resource-strapped Kenyan and Jamaican forces, which have struggled to contain the gangs terrorizing the Caribbean nation.

Kenyan officers in Haiti have asked President William Ruto for clarifications on their compensation. Addressing Ruto on Saturday when the President visited Port-au-Prince in Haiti, he assured that they have kept going whenever they faced challenges during their mission.
